There’s a new face in the Arctic Ring of Life at the Detroit Zoo — meet Haley, a 22-year-old polar bear.
Haley arrived from the Memphis Zoo, where she had lived since she was just four years old. Her move was part of a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), aimed at supporting a healthy and genetically diverse population of polar bears in human care.
Named after Halley’s Comet, Haley was born on November 15, 2002. She now joins current residents Nuka, a 20-year-old male, and Suka, a 12-year-old female, in the Zoo’s expansive 4-acre Arctic Ring of Life.
Zoo officials say that while Haley adjusts, she may sometimes choose to stay behind the scenes, but guests still have a chance to spot her during regular Zoo hours.
