The Detroit Zoo is celebrating a special arrival this week after a 34-year-old chimpanzee named Nyani gave birth to her first baby on July 4th, 2025.
According to zoo officials, Nyani, who was born at the Detroit Zoo, delivered a healthy baby girl.
Nyani and her newborn are said to be doing exceptionally well. Right now, the two are spending time bonding behind the scenes and are slowly being introduced to the rest of the chimpanzee group.
Zoo staff said the mother and baby will eventually be visible to the public in their habitat once animal care experts determine they’re ready.
