Detroit Woman’s Lyft Lawsuit Over Being Denied Entry for Her Weight Settled

A Detroit woman who said she was denied a Lyft ride because of her weight has resolved her lawsuit against the rideshare company, her attorneys confirmed to Metro Detroit News today.

Details of the resolution have not yet been released.

The case stems from a January 2025 incident that was caught on camera, showing a driver refusing to provide service because of Dank Demoss’s size.

Her legal team, attorneys Jonathan Marko and Zach Runyan, previously announced they were filing suit against Lyft. In a statement at the time, they condemned the driver’s actions:

“Fat shaming is illegal in Michigan, and no one should be denied a public service because of their weight. What happened to our client was not only illegal but also dangerous. If she had no transportation, she could have been left stranded in the cold or in a hazardous situation. This type of behavior could lead to injury or worse and is completely unacceptable.”

Demoss previously told MDN:

“I was discriminated against. I stand for my people, my community, and making change — not just for me but for everyone.”

Lyft also responded in the comments of Demoss’s Instagram post, calling the driver’s behavior “unacceptable” and asking her to contact the company so they could investigate and “make things right.”
