Detroit Woman Sentenced Up to 20 Years in Prison After Ordering Break-In That Ended With Stolen Urn of Ashes

A Detroit woman who once made headlines after a group of suspects stormed a home, vandalized it, and stole an urn of ashes has now been sentenced.

Kayla L-Asi, who prosecutors said ordered the group to break into the home during a dispute tied to a New Year’s Eve party, pled guilty in July to Home Invasion – 1st Degree and Conspiracy – Legal Act/Illegal Manner.

On Friday, a judge sentenced her to 15 months to 20 years in prison for the home invasion and 15 months to 5 years for conspiracy. The sentences will run concurrently, meaning her maximum exposure is 20 years behind bars.

The case drew widespread attention after video of the incident was live-streamed on social media.

During Friday’s sentencing, the homeowner delivered testimony, describing the trauma her family endured:

“She brought everybody back to my home where my daughter doesn’t even stay.”

“They busted my window out. My grandma was laying on the couch. If I didn’t move my grandma, that brick could have hit her and harmed her. She wasn’t thinking. She just let the internet be corrupt. Come to somebody’s home who had nothing to do with it.”

The homeowner also revealed she has been in psychiatric treatment because of the break-in and what was taken.
