Detroit SOC 2024: major developments, carjack city no-more, transformation of 12K blighted homes, drop in unemployment

Mayor Mike Duggan delivered his 2024 State of the City Address on Wednesday.

▪️Demolished 21,000 blighted houses in 6 years.12,000 were sold or rehabbed.

▪️Improvements continued with alley clean-ups, new sidewalks, dangerous tree removals, and roof replacements.

▪️The Joe Louis Greenway will be the most significant recreation pathway that will rehab nearby neighborhoods.

▪️In 2024 they will prioritize the removal of abandoned and illegal vehicles in Detroit neighborhoods by ticketing and enforcing laws.

▪️The unemployment rate in Detroit has decreased.

▪️#Detroit was once know as “Carjack City.” Now the national leader in reduced carjackings. The city also saw the fewest homicides since 1966 and hired 230 officers in 2023 with a $10,000 pay increase.

▪️More buses added to DDOT to the road, increase the number of bus drivers and pay rate, and building a new transit center.

▪️The Brand New Dexter Elmhurst Center will be the HELEN MOORE COMMUNITY CENTER named after community activities Mother Helen Moore.

▪️1B invested into Affordable Housing.

▪️Resident students at schools located in Detroit get full college scholarships for free. Detroitmi.gov/DetroitForLife

▪️Plan for reducing taxes:
Pushing Legislation in Lansing for an immediate 17% property tax cut and yearly million dollar tax cut on a city level.
