Detroit Public Schools Community District hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the new Pershing High School & athletic building.
The new Pershing High School building will feature modern classrooms, advanced science and technology labs and cutting-edge athletic facilities. Additionally, the design prioritizes access to natural light, collaborative learning spaces, and enhanced security features, according to a news release.
Construction on the new $77 million building will begin in early 2025, with completion expected by 2027, and the athletic complex slated to open in the spring of 2029.
The existing Pershing High School, originally built in 1929, has served the community for nearly a century. The school’s infrastructure has been deemed inadequate, according to the district. Restoring the existing structure would cost approximately $40 million as of 2022.
This marks the first high school new build under DPSCD’s 20-year Facilities Master Plan (FMP).
The FMP seeks to address decades of underinvestment in school infrastructure by providing students with modern, and high-quality learning environments.
The plan includes five new school builds. The five new builds under the FMP include Pershing High School, Cody High School, Southeastern High School Annex, Paul Robeson Malcolm X Academy, and Phoenix Academy.
