Detroit police shut down gas station after man dies while fleeing clerk who fired shots at him

Detroit police, BSEED have shut down a gas station following the death of a man who jumped onto the Lodge Freeway after a gas station clerk fired shots at him.

The original incident happened at the mobile gas station in the area of Lodge and McNichols.

According to family and police, the clerk fired shots at the 38-year-old victim, Tony Williams, because he was allegedly stealing from the gas station. The clerk chased him outside the gas station after exiting bulletproof glass, police say.

Tony fled from the scene to get away from the clerk and eventually jumped onto the freeway.

The clerk was arrested, and an investigation by police is ongoing. No charges have been issued yet.

Police have shut down the gas station, suspending the license due to the clerk’s dangerous actions, police said.

Community activists, including Newera Detroit, city council members, and family, attended the closure.

This is not the first time something like this has happened at the same gas station.

In May of 2023, in an unrelated incident, a clerk locked several customers inside after catching one of them who was stealing snacks. The thief eventually shot three people after he was not allowed to leave. One person died in the shooting.
