Detroit police release bodycam of encounter with Palestine protest

A recent update from Detroit police has shed new light on an incident involving a police officer and a pro-Palestine protestor during a demonstration.

At a press conference held on Monday, May 20, 2024, Detroit Police Chief James White provided extended bodycam footage that captured a the exchange between the officer and the protester.

The officer told the protester to “why don’t you go back to Mexico,” a comment that sparked outrage.

However, police clarified that the officer was referring to the protester’s recent vacation in Mexico, which he had apparently seen on her Instagram profile. Chief White emphasized that the department does not typically monitor the social media activities of protesters, and they are currently investigating how the officer came across her Instagram profile.

In light of the incident and pending further investigation, the officer involved has been relieved of street duty and placed on administrative duty.
