Detroit police begin traffic operation: 375 tickets issued, 24 arrest, 26 cars impounded in 12 hours

The Detroit Police Department is ramping up efforts to combat reckless driving with the launch of Operation Accident Reduction, a monthly enforcement initiative aimed at improving road safety.

The 12th Precinct, with WCSO is conducting the first wave of enforcement, targeting aggressive driving, speeding, operating while intoxicated (OWI), red-light infractions, stop sign violations, and more.

Officers used undercover surveillance, radar units to catch offenders in real-time.

The 12th precinct area reported 1,900 crashes in 2024 alone. Just Thursday, a bus crashed into a church after a driver ran a red light in the area of Meyers and 7 Mile.

In recent months, the city has also seen several fatal crashes, with speeding, red-light running, aggressive driving, and distracted driving being major contributors.

The DPD plans to conduct at least two traffic blitzes per month through April, with enforcement efforts rotating across the city’s most problematic areas, according to officials.

Stats for day one of the traffic enforcement operation on Friday:
24 arrests – including for CCW, Possession of Stolen Motor Vehicle, Narcotics
26 vehicles impounded
375 tickets issued
