A 24-year-old Detroit mother & well know hairstylist is on the road to recovery after she was struck by a car going the wrong way on the freeway on Sunday.
The crash occurred on westbound I-96 near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Michigan State Police received reports of a sedan traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-96. Moments later, a head-on collision was reported. Upon arrival, troopers found a heavily damaged sedan and SUV at the scene.
The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was pronounced dead on impact. Six other individuals, including Kayla, were injured.
Kayla, who was in the SUV traveling the right way, recounted her experience and described the moments following the crash. “I woke up in a panic in the hospital, screaming & in pain like never before,” she said.
She was unconscious upon arrival and underwent two emergency surgeries, one to address internal bleeding in her pancreas and another to repair extensive injuries to her leg. Her family was unable to locate her for 8 hours due to her being listed as unidentified at the hospital.
Kayla now faces a long road to recovery, including learning to walk again. “All I could think of was, this can’t be happening. My daughter needs me the most,” she said.
As a single mother, the accident has turned Kayla’s life upside down. “If you know me, you know that I’ll build myself up brick by brick before I allow anyone to help me.”
A GoFundMe campaign has been launched to help Kayla cover medical expenses, daily living costs, and support her daughter while she focuses on recovery.
