Detroit First Responders Honored for Life-Saving Work Before Hospital Arrival

By Benicia, TMDN

First responders from across the city were recognized this week at DMC Sinai Grace Hospital by the Detroit East Medical Control Authority (DEMCA) for their extraordinary dedication to saving lives and providing critical pre-hospital care.

The ceremony honored teams that have risen to the challenge in moments of crisis. From rapid stabilization in high-pressure emergencies to consoling grieving families, these responders embody courage, skill, and compassion. Damon Gorelick, the executive director of DEMCA, shared that “this is extra important for us to truly say ‘Thank you’ in general. Thank you for your service and everything they are trying to do to keep this community safe & better.”

One team was commended for achieving patient stabilization in just under five minutes from the time of arrival.

Additional honors were given to responders whose immediate use of CPR and quick deployment of the Lucas device for unresponsive patients directly contributed to successful recoveries.

Among the most notable stories highlighted was that of a woman who suffered cardiac arrest while pregnant. First responders not only worked to save her life but also delivered her child, who weighed less than one pound at birth, now weighing 5lbs.

Dr. Robert Dunne, the Medical Director of DEMCA, noted that “patients’ lives are made better by our emergency responders… we want to recognize the good work that is going on out there!”

Hospital leaders emphasized the invaluable role these responders play in Detroit’s healthcare system, often serving as the first point of care during life-threatening situations. Detroit is safer and stronger because of their service.

These stories serve as a powerful reminder that when seconds matter most, Detroit’s first responders answer the call with skill and compassion. Their commitment saves lives, brings comfort to families, and strengthens the very fabric of the city.
