Known throughout the city as “The People’s Chief,” Harris brings nearly three decades of public service experience and a deep-rooted connection to Detroit neighborhoods. His commitment to the city began in childhood, when he dreamed of becoming a firefighter while playing in his toy fire chief car. That passion never faded.

Harris worked his way through the ranks of the Detroit Fire Department, where he was appointed Chief of Community Relations in July 2021.

He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration and will receive his MBA in Leadership on May 3, 2025. He is also a graduate of the Carl Holmes Executive Development Institute in Georgia and the Eastern Michigan University Staff and Command Executive Fire Management program.

Harris officially announced his campaign for the at-large council seat earlier this month, backed by community members, local leaders, and faith organizations. His campaign message centers on unity, service, and accountability.

“I’m fired up and ready to serve Detroit,” Harris said in a campaign statement. “I’ve spent my life running toward the challenges our city faces. Now I’m stepping up to lead with that same heart, courage, and commitment—because Detroit deserves bold, honest leadership that delivers.”

His platform includes improving emergency services, cleaning up blight, supporting large corporations as well as local businesses, increasing transparency in city government, and expanding affordable housing across Detroit.

Outside of his career, Harris is an active father of two daughters. He has served as President of the Detroit Fire Department’s Phoenix organization.

The primary election is scheduled for August 5, 2025.
