The Oakland County Sheriff’s deputy who was shot and killed in Detroit has been identified.
Deputy Brad Reckling was a husband and father of children aged 5, 4, and 1, with another baby on the way.
He had been on the job for nine years and had won awards such as the Lifesaving Citation.
The incident occurred Saturday night on Park Grove, near Gratiot and McNichols.
According to officials, the officer, who was in plain clothes, was following several suspects in a recently stolen car from Oakland County before it entered Detroit.
The car came to an abrupt stop, and one occupant exited and began firing shots at the deputy. The deputy was struck in the head and chest and was later pronounced dead.
Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said the deputy was ambushed after the suspect realized they were being followed.
Three suspects were taken into custody after being found within the perimeter set up by police.
