Chaotic Detroit Street Takeover Ends With Car Set on Fire, People on Bus Roof, Fireworks Thrown

A chaotic scene unfolded early Saturday morning near 7 Mile and Meyers as large crowds gathered during an illegal street takeover on the city’s west side.

At round 4:15 a.m. on July 5, officers were dispatched to the area after reports of vehicles doing donuts and blocking the intersection. A DDOT bus driver also requested help after a large crowd surrounded and began climbing on a city bus.

Upon arrival, officers found a Dodge Challenger fully engulfed in flames. It’s believed fireworks may have been used to ignite the vehicle, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

Detroit Fire crews were called to the scene and encountered resistance from the crowd. Fireworks were launched at a fire rig as they attempted to put out the fire.

Two individuals were arrested for resisting and obstructing police during the response. The Detroit Police Department is asking anyone with information on who may have set the car on fire to contact the 12th Precinct Detective Unit.
