February is Black History Month, and in Metro Detroit, there are a variety of events that celebrate the rich history, culture, and contributions of African Americans throughout the region.
Here is a look at some events happening throughout February:
Jazz & Black History Celebration
On February 10, jazz singer Sky Covington will perform at Aretha’s Jazz Cafe in Detroit, blending music with stories about jazz’s role in Black history.
Special Exhibits at The Henry Ford Museum
The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn will showcase We Shall Overcome, an exhibit highlighting the 60th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act. Visitors can also see the historic Rosa Parks bus and learn about key moments in the civil rights movement.
Southfield’s Black History Month Events
Southfield Parks & Recreation events include a Hustle & Flow dance party on February 8, a Harriet Tubman tribute on February 16, and a screening of the film Shirley later in the month.
African American Family Book Expo
Celebrate Black literature at the African American Family Book Expo in Southfield on February 22, featuring local Black authors.
TechTown Detroit’s Black Business Conference
TechTown Detroit will host a business conference on February 17 to support and connect Black entrepreneurs across the city.
Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History
The museum’s exhibits, like And Still We Rise, highlight African American history. Throughout the month, there will be special events, talks, and cultural activities.
University of Detroit Mercy Events
The university will host discussions, film screenings, musical performances, and art exhibits focusing on Black history and culture.
Ann Arbor District Library Programs
The library will offer storytimes, cultural presentations, and events for all ages that celebrate Black history.
Oakland Community College’s Cultural Celebration
On February 14, Oakland Community College will host A Taste of Heritage, History, & Hope, featuring a soul food lunch and educational events highlighting African American culture.
