Brothas on the Block with New Era Detroit

This week members of the community gathered on Detroit’s west side for Brothas on the Block, an outreach event hosted by New Era Detroit, the founding chapter of the larger New Era World organization. The event served as another powerful display of unity, accountability, & dedication to uplifting urban communities through direct engagement and grassroots support.

Brothas on the Block provided an opportunity for community members to build relationships, discuss safety, and inspire self-empowerment. Volunteers and organizers walked block by block on the west side, speaking with residents, listening to concerns, and offering resources centered around New Era World’s five pillars of accountability: self, household, community, economic, and political.

New Era World describes itself as a “family movement” through its New Era Community Connection (NECC) initiative, which is designed to connect & develop urban communities worldwide. NECC’s mission emphasizes self-sufficiency and sustainability within often overlooked neighborhoods, using hands-on programs and consistent outreach to strengthen ties among residents.

One of the Detroit chapter’s most impactful efforts, the Safe Zone Initiative, was also highlighted during the event by members Zeek, & Dre. The program encourages local business owners to become safe havens for individuals in danger, particularly in response to the rising concerns of human trafficking and child abduction. Participating businesses display Safe Zone decals in their windows, signaling to the community that they are places of refuge and safety.

“Keeping our streets safe starts with us,” Zeek shared during the event. “We can’t wait for someone else to fix our community, we have to take responsibility and protect each other.”

The atmosphere was filled with both purpose & pride as residents showed appreciation for the ongoing presence of New Era Detroit in their neighborhoods. The group’s commitment to direct action from distributing resources to fostering dialogue about local safety, continues to reinforce its mission of rebuilding and protecting Detroit communities from within.

As New Era Detroit continues to expand its outreach, Brothas on the Block remains a cornerstone program in its effort to strengthen accountability, awareness, and unity “one block at a time”.
