Aspiring physician assistant fatally shot by ex-boyfriend at Westland apartment complex

Family members have identified the 20-year-old woman who died in a Westland murder-suicide as Sarah Carroll.

Police were called to an apartment complex near Warren Road and Central City Parkway around 9:30 p.m. Saturday after a 911 call that stated a had shot his girlfriend, according to sources.

Officers arrived and found both a man and a woman dead. Westland police has still not released any details.

Relatives say Carroll was studying to become a physician assistant and had recently started living alone after her ex-boyfriend moved out of the apartment. Family told MDN that he killed Carroll and then took his own life.

Carroll’s family says she was just beginning her life and now they are left to grieve a future taken far too soon. She was described as smart, brave, strong, and had a smile that lit up every room.

Sarah’s aunt, Debbie Carroll, told MDN the tragedy highlights the need to check in with family.

“Reach out to loved ones and make sure they are OK. He ( ex-boyfriend) struggled with mental health issues. He didn’t have any support. Make sure loved ones are OK,” she said.
