Abandoned Mammoth building on Grand River to be demolished after court order

The abandoned Mammoth Building, located at the corner of Grand River Avenue and Greenfield Road, is set to be demolished.

A Detroit judge this week approved the demolition of the building.

In May 2023, the City of Detroit filed a lawsuit against the owners of the Mammoth Building. According to the city, the property has been neglected by the current owners for more than 20 years. The building has suffered significant structural deterioration and has become a blight to the surrounding neighborhood, as well as a danger to the health and safety of area residents.

The pedestrian bridge over Grand River Avenue has also been declared an unsafe structure.

In August 2023, the owner of the building announced that it would be getting a new look.

“The Experience,” the new name given by the investors, was planned to be transformed into a mixed-use facility.

It was set to include:
• 100 apartment units
• 80,000 square feet of retail space
• Restaurants
• A facility for children’s education and entertainment, and more.

It is currently unknown where those plans stand after the new ruling.
