Detroit’s Michigan Central to Add Train and Bus Station Connecting Chicago, Windsor, and Toronto

A new multimodal transportation hub is being planned in Detroit’s Michigan Central Station, aiming to connect the city with Chicago, Windsor, and beyond.

The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the City of Detroit, and Michigan Central have signed an agreement to begin early research and engineering for the project.

The plan includes a total of $40 million in funding — with $10 million coming from a federal transit grant and $30 million from the state.

The proposed transit hub would include new infrastructure for passenger rail and intercity bus service. It’s expected to expand regional connectivity, offering a direct link between the Detroit-Ann Arbor corridor and Detroit Metro Airport, while also supporting the proposed Amtrak Wolverine route extension from Chicago through Detroit to Windsor and Toronto.

Officials say the project will replace aging transportation facilities and bring modern amenities to travelers, positioning Detroit as a key player in regional and international mobility.

Final project designs, funding details, and timelines will be shared as the planning process continues.
