Man Shot After Picking Up Gun and Turning Toward Officer

One person is in critical condition after an officer-involved shooting on the Detroit east side.

According to Detroit Police Department’s 1st assistant chief Charles Fitzgerald, gang intel units were conducting an investigation in the area of Moross & Kelly when they approached a man who appeared to be armed.

“The suspect took off running. Officers then gave chase. At one point, the suspect dropped his weapon. He stopped, bent over to pick it up, turned toward the officer’s direction. Officer fired multiple shots,” he said.

Fitzgerald said the man then “attempted to throw the gun up on the roof,” and a weapon was recovered there.

“Unfortunately, this individual was shot multiple times. He’s been taken to the hospital. He’s listed in critical condition,” Fitzgerald stated.

Authorities described the man as in his mid-20s. The investigation is ongoing.
