Officials confirm 1st case of West Nile virus in Oakland county this year

The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services has confirmed the first human case of West Nile Virus (WNV) in Oakland County this year.

Officials say the patient had no recent travel history. This is the county’s first case in 2025 and the second confirmed in Michigan.

Health officials are urging residents, especially older adults, to take precautions against mosquito bites:
• Use insect repellent registered with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
• Eliminate standing water around your home where mosquitoes can breed.
• Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants outdoors.
• Limit time outside from dusk to dawn, when mosquitoes are most active.
• Make sure window and door screens are in good condition.

West Nile Virus is spread to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. Most people who get the virus experience no symptoms or only mild illness, such as fever, headache, or body aches. However, in some cases, the virus can cause serious complications, including brain inflammation.
