16-Year-Old Charged with Murder After Running Red Light & Crashing Stolen Car During Roseville Police Chase, Leaving Father of 2 Dead

A Detroit teen has been charged as an adult after allegedly crashing into a car and causing the death of an Oakland County father of two while fleeing from Roseville police early Saturday morning.

Family members have identified the victim as 28-year-old Alex Habib, a husband and father to a 1-year-old daughter and a 3-month-old son. Habib was working as an Uber driver at the time of the crash.

The fatal collision occurred around 2:40 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, near 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue. Authorities say the chase began with Clinton Township police, who later ended the pursuit. Roseville police then took over, with the suspect reportedly reaching speeds of over 130 miles per hour before passing a light & slamming into Habib’s vehicle.

The suspect has been identified as Daniel Canales, 16, of Detroit. He was formally arraigned in 41B District Court in Clinton Township.

Canales is facing five felony charges including Second-Degree Murder.

During the arraignment, the prosecutor said the entire incident was captured on video and described Canales’ actions as extremely reckless, pointing out that he fled from two police departments and was driving with a 12-year-old in the vehicle at the time of the crash.

The judge denied bond.
