Community groups call on legislators, go door-to-door to connect with youth after fatal shooting of 4-year-old, teen

Detroit Community groups, violence intervention leaders gathered Monday morning to launch a citywide response following a tragic shooting that claimed the life of a 4-year-old child and an 18-year-old at Skinner Playfield, near Denby High School.

The initiative, called Protect the Zone, brings together all of Detroit’s Community Violence Intervention organizations in a coordinated effort to connect with youth and prevent further bloodshed. Teams will be going door-to-door this summer to reach every household with kids aged 12 to 17, offering immediate support, programming opportunities, and conflict intervention services.

Organizers emphasized the plan is not just symbolic. Leaders say they are mobilizing block-by-block to make sure no child slips through the cracks this summer.

The call for action comes just days after a drive-by shooting on the city’s east side near Kelly and Morang took the lives of 4-year-old Samir Grubbs and 18-year-old Davyion. A 17-year-old was also injured and remains hospitalized. The suspects remain on the run.

Supporters of the new initiative are pushing for more community involvement and accountability from both local leaders and lawmakers.
