WNBA is officially returning to Detroit

The WNBA is officially bringing a team back to Detroit. The league announced Monday that Detroit will join as an expansion franchise in 2029.

“This is a huge win for Detroit and the WNBA,” said Pistons owner Tom Gores. “Today marks the long-hoped-for return of the WNBA to a city with deep basketball roots and a championship tradition.”

Detroit sports stars Grant Hill, Chris Webber, and Jared Goff will be owners. The team will play at Little Caesars Arena and is part of a major WNBA expansion to 18 teams by 2030.

“The demand for women’s basketball has never been higher,” said WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert.

Gores said the team will bring “new energy, investment and infrastructure to our city and the WNBA.”

Detroit previously had a WNBA team, the Detroit Shock, which won three championships before relocating in 2009.
