The Coleman A. Young Recreation Center has officially reopened after undergoing a significant $11 million renovation. The upgrades were made possible through funding from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) contributing $5.9 million, and an unlimited Tax General Obligation (UTGO) bond adding $5.1 million.
The recreation center opened its doors in 1980 and had been closed since March 2020 due to the pandemic. Now, after years of planning and construction, the facility boasts major improvements, including:
• Parking lot repairs and the addition of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations
• New exterior windows, a new entrance, and gym floor refinishing
• A new elevator, pool system enhancements, and boiler replacement
• Updated HVAC systems, electrical upgrades, and more
With the reopening of the Coleman A. Young Recreation Center, Detroit now operates 13 recreation centers available to the public.
