A Michigan State Police trooper is in serious condition and a 23-year-old man is dead following a shooting during an undercover car theft operation early Monday morning in Detroit.
The incident happened around 4:40 a.m. in the area of 20200 Murray Hill, near 8 Mile and Southfield, on the city’s west side.
According to MSP, troopers with the department’s Auto Theft Team were conducting an undercover operation related to vehicle thefts when they began investigating a home connected to the case.
During the operation, a man exited the residence and opened fire on one of the troopers, firing three shots.
The trooper was struck and rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains in serious condition.
The 23-year-old man was fatally shot during the exchange of gunfire. Police have not confirmed whether the troopers were in uniform or whether the man who was fatally shot was directly connected to the original car theft investigation.
Michigan State Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
