13-year-old girl rescued after she says she was kidnapped by man she met on Snapchat

An investigation is underway after a 13-year-old girl says she was kidnapped by a man she met on Snapchat. When police came to rescue her, the man attempted to take his own life.

The incident occurred Monday on Penrod Street, near Warren Ave and Southfield Freeway.

Around 11 a.m., the girl texted her mother, saying she needed help, and shared her location. Shortly after, Detroit police responded to a 911 call and arrived at the scene.

Upon approaching the residence, officers found the suspect, who then ran to the back of the home & shot himself. He was transported to the hospital and is listed in critical condition.

The 49-year-old man, who lured the Garden City teen on Snapchat, picked her up & drove her to a home in Detroit.

We are told the suspect is on the sex offender registry. The investigation remains ongoing.
