The Detroit Academy of Arts and Sciences (DAAS) is gearing up for a move, with plans to relocate to the historic Virginia Park community in Detroit.
They plan to move to the former Hutchins Middle School site at 8820 Woodrow Wilson St.
The relocation is part of a broader redevelopment plan in the area, which includes a tech hub, retail spaces, and new housing around the Herman Kiefer complex.
The school’s choir once captured national attention with a viral performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, a testament to DAAS’s commitment to the arts.
Maurice Morton, DAAS Project Coordinator, highlighted the impact of this proposed move, stating, “This proposed relocation brings a new chapter for DAAS, enhancing opportunities for our students and revitalizing the neighborhood.”
Effect Detroit, a nonprofit championing community growth, is collaborating on this project to ensure long-term success. As CEO Samantha Scott-Jenkins explained, “This redevelopment isn’t just about buildings; it’s about empowering our communities and ensuring Detroit’s future shines for all.”
