Detroit plans to connect downtown to midtown with cap over I-75

Plans for Detroit’s I-75 Cap Project, a proposed cover over the I-75 freeway to bridge Downtown and Midtown, are progressing with new community-driven design details and support.

The project, discussed in a recent public meeting this week, seeks to restore connectivity severed by the freeway, offering a transformative change for the city’s landscape.

The proposed cap will span 1,600 feet from 3rd Avenue to Brush Street, covering a portion of I-75 with an accessible deck that features green spaces, public seating, and pedestrian pathways, according to a news release.

There will be amenities such as landscaped areas, open plazas, and shared spaces for gatherings.

The I-75 Cap Project represents an opportunity to enhance urban mobility and neighborhood connectivity, making it easier for residents to travel between Midtown and Downtown. The project is also expected to provide economic and recreational benefits.
