Manhunt underway for suspect who shot & killed Melvindale police officer

A multi-agency manhunt is underway for the alleged suspect who shot & killed Melvindale police officer Sunday morning.

The Melvindale officer was shot after making contact with 2 subjects at Oakwood & Dix, Finish Line Car Wash, around 11:40AM this morning.

The officer notified dispatch he was out making contact with 2 at the car wash. Shortly after contact was made, the officer reported he had at least 1 subject running from the scene when he stopped answering the radio.

Additional officers arrived and located the officer down. He was pronounced deceased at a local hospital.

The alleged suspect has been identified as 44-year-old Michael Lopez, a latino male, approx 6 feet 1 inch tall, and approx 245 lbs.

Officers raided several locations in connection but have still not located the suspect.

The officer had been identified as Mohamed Said. Said graduated from the police academy and joined the force within the last year. He is a graduate of Melvindale high school and loved helping the community, according to the chief.
