Shooting in Oakland County leaves man dead

A man is dead after being shot by his ex-girlfriend’s stepson during a home invasion in Oakland County.

The incident occurred Wednesday morning in the block of Elkhorn Lake, near Clarkston and S. Lapeer Road in Oakland County.

According to police, a 67-year-old man went to his 62-year-old ex-girlfriend’s house and attempted to break in. He managed to break a window with an axe and gained entry.

The ex-girlfriend and her 36-year-old stepson ran upstairs and barricaded themselves in a bedroom.

Once the suspect entered the room, he told the stepson he was there for “her” and pointed at his ex-girlfriend. As he began to approach her with a gun, the stepson pulled out a gun and shot the suspect in the head.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene. No one else was injured.

They had a 17-year relationship together. The ex-girlfriend had a personal protection order against the suspect. The suspect had also been served an Extreme Risk Protection Order (Red Flag Law), which allows law enforcement to confiscate a person’s weapons.

Law enforcement had taken his weapons, but the suspect managed to obtain a gun that belonged to his ex-wife, according to police. The investigation is ongoing. @metrodetroitnews
