A man was fatally shot by Wayne police Tuesday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 2:30 PM at an apartment complex on Michigan Avenue near S. Wayne Road.
According to a news release from Wayne Police, officers received a call from a 40-year-old suicidal man who stated that he had cut himself all over his body and was trying to kill himself. The man, who was caring for his 4-year-old child inside the apartment, also told the 911 operator that he was schizophrenic and off his medication.
Upon arrival, officers encountered the man at the doorway of his apartment. He was visibly bleeding from self-inflicted wounds and still armed with a knife.
Police say the man failed to respond to several verbal commands, prompting officers to attempt two less-than-lethal taser deployments, both of which were ineffective. The man then charged toward the officers, and one officer fired an unknown number of shots to stop him.
The man died at the scene. Michigan State Police are handling the investigation.
