A small casket, surrounded by grieving loved ones, marked the heartbreaking farewell to 6-year-old Rylee Love — a little boy whose life was stolen far too soon.
Rylee was laid to rest today at Woodlawn Cemetery, following an emotional funeral service in Eastpointe attended by family and members of the community. Detroit police officers led the procession, honoring the child whose death has shaken the city.
“Rylee was a risk taker, always full of life and energy. He loved swimming, playing with his siblings, and brought so much joy to our family. His love for his mom and dad was endless, and he was truly the highlight of my days,” his mother, Tarhesha Love, said.
The shooting unfolded Sunday night on Anglin Street near East McNichols and Joseph Campau.
Investigators say a shootout between at least two vehicles sent bullets flying down the street. One of those bullets tore through the walls of Rylee’s home and struck him in the head.
He was rushed to the hospital, and did not survive.
Multiple rifle casings were found at the scene, and a red Jeep is being investigated as a vehicle of interest. So far, no arrests have been made, but there are strong leads.
On the night of the shooting, Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison, called the murder a senseless act of violence and that he will not rest until we capture the individuals responsible.
At the young boys funeral the chief have words of encouragement and reassurance to the family.
“We should not be here today” said Chief Bettison. “On behalf of myself and the entire Detroit Police Department, you have our deepest condolences. But I assure you, my officers are working relentlessly to get those individuals responsible for this horrific crime, off the streets.”
This marks the second young child who was fatally shot in Detroit. On June 27, 2025, 4-year-old Samir Grubbs was fatally shot. One month later, on July 27, Rylee Love lost his life.
