3 severely burned including 2 teens after boat explosion in Oakland County lake

A Waterford Township man, his son, and a friend were seriously injured Sunday afternoon after a boat explosion at Pontiac Lake.

Officials say the group was on a 17-foot Chris-Craft boat at the public boat launch near M-59 and Williams Lake Road when the explosion occurred. The incident happened around 1:20 p.m. as they were preparing to head out onto the lake and the ignition switch was turned on.

The Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue Team and Waterford Township Fire Department responded to the scene. By the time first responders arrived, the fire had already burned itself out.

One of the 16-year-old boys was transported to the hospital with burns covering more than 50 percent of his body and is currently in critical condition. The father, 45, and his son were also hospitalized with severe burns and are listed in stable condition.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue Team.
