24/7 free Smart Bathrooms launch in Downtown Detroit

Two portable ‘smart’ bathrooms with running water opened today near Campus Martius Park in downtown Detroit.

The 24-hour units are provided and maintained by Throne Labs, a company specializing in secure, app-enabled restrooms.

Detroit is the third Michigan city to install the Throne bathrooms. Ann Arbor rolled out its first unit in 2024, and Royal Oak opened some this month. Each visit is limited to ten minutes. Users unlock the doors with the Throne app or by scanning the QR code on the exterior.

Inside, visitors will find a standard toilet, a running-water sink, paper towels and a ventilation system. The climate-controlled units are fully wheelchair-accessible and include a baby-changing station.
