2-Year-Old Girl Dies After Being Accidentally Run Over by Father in Detroit

A 2-year-old girl has died after being struck by a vehicle driven by her father on Detroit’s east side.

Captain Derrick Griffin with the Detroit Police Department says the incident happened around 5:34 p.m. Sunday. Officers from the 11th Precinct responded after a 911 call reported a child hit by a vehicle.

“Approximately 5:34 this evening, a call was made to 911. The officers from the 11th Precinct responded to find that a child had been struck by a vehicle. The preliminary information reveals that the child was in the arms of her sibling, got down somehow, ran into the street as the father was preparing to pull off. The child was struck, at which point the officers responded. Officers from the 11th Precinct transported the child to Children’s Hospital in critical condition. Later found out that the child was deceased,” said Griffin.

He confirmed the child was a 2-year-old female and the vehicle was being driven by her father. “The father was in the vehicle preparing to pull off. So at this time, it appears to be an accident,” he added.

Detectives from the department’s Fatal Squad Unit and Child Abuse Unit are handling the investigation.

“At this time, as you can see in the background, officers are currently conducting an investigation at this time,” Griffin said. “Children are our most precious citizens of the city and so this is a tragedy for the family and it’s a tragedy for the city. So our hearts and condolences go out to this family. And to this community.”

Police say the investigation is ongoing and final information will be released once it is complete.
