2 teens shot in Hamtramck

Two teenagers were rushed to the hospital Monday night after a shooting at the Hamtramck Housing Commission complex in the area of I-75 & Caniff.

According to Hamtramck’s Chief of Police Jamiel Altaheri, officers responded to the scene after a shooting broke out. A 17-year-old female and a 16-year-old male, described as boyfriend and girlfriend, were found injured. One victim was grazed in the head, and the other victim was shot in the torso.

Both teens were transported to a local hospital and are expected to survive.

The police chief said the shooting appeared to stem from a dispute. Investigators have strong leads on the suspected shooter.

“We have good relations with the community here, everyone here, from the elders, the young,” he said. “We had a couple of events here. Just at this location — we had a turkey giveaway, Christmas event, a coat drive. So everybody here is very supportive. It’s just unfortunate, this situation does not represent the entire community. But at the end of the day, we have to come together, police and community, to apprehend this individual and send a strong message of stop the violence, stop the cycle of violence.”

Authorities are asking anyone with information to come forward.
