The Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed that 2-year-old A’Millah Currie and 9-year-old Darnell Currie, Jr. died from carbon monoxide toxicity, ruling their deaths as accidental.
The updated findings come after complete examinations were performed with the cause and manner of death officially certified on March 5, 2025.
The tragic case unfolded in February 2025 when Detroit police launched an investigation after the children were brought to Children’s Hospital and pronounced dead on arrival. Their mother, who was experiencing homelessness, had been sleeping with her five children—ages 2 to 13—inside a minivan parked at the Hollywood Casino parking structure.
Authorities initially suspected the children may have frozen to death. However, the medical examiner’s findings now confirm that carbon monoxide toxicity was the cause.
