A man has been charged after he allegedly fatally shot his neighbor during an altercation in Canton.
47-year-old Devereaux Christopher Johnson was arraigned in 35th District Court on charges related to the fatal shooting Nathan Morris.
- Homicide – First Degree Murder – Premeditated: A felony punishable by life imprisonment without parole.
- Weapons – Firearms – Possession by a Felon: A felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
- Two counts of Felony Firearm
Judge James A. Plakas ordered Johnson to be held at Wayne County Jail without bond.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the incident occurred on Saturday morning when Johnson allegedly initiated an argument with Morris as he walked down the street. The argument escalated, and Johnson reportedly fired multiple shots, killing the unarmed Morris.
Nathan Morris was well-known in his community as a dedicated family man, an engineer at Ford Motors, and a passionate advocate for local issues. He ran for the Canton School Board to ensure the safety of his daughters, Molly and Zoey.
On the day of the incident, Morris was taking a walk with his family when his daughter touched the neighbor’s yard. Johnson allegedly brandished a gun and began threatening the family. Morris sent his family home and attempted to de-escalate the situation, but was tragically shot and killed, according to a statement by the Michigan GOP.
