A 15-year-old Detroit boy was honored Tuesday with the Spirit of Detroit Award after performing CPR on an unresponsive neighbor.
On January 3, 2024, his neighbor experienced a medical emergency while entering his vehicle at home on Detroit’s northwest side, in the Evergreen-Outer Drive neighborhood.
Gregory Pope III, a 9th grader attending Detroit Public School Community District’s Henry Ford High School, was playing video games when he heard neighbors calling for help.
Without hesitation, Gregory dropped what he was doing and ran towards the commotion. He then helped pull him out of the vehicle and began performing CPR in an attempt to save his life.
Gregory Pope III went unrecognized until a neighbor in the community alerted the Council President Pro Tem Tate. He was presented a Spirit of Detroit Award for his heroic actions.
