A 12-year-old was rescued after falling through ice on a Monroe County pond.
On Tuesday January 23rd at 8:44am, the Dundee Police Department and Dundee Fire Department were dispatched to the pond at Cabelas at 110 E. Cabela Dr. after a 911 call was received by Monroe County Central Dispatch reporting that someone had fallen through the ice on the pond.
Emergency Crews began arriving and observed a subject, later identified as a 12 year-old Dundee boy, in the middle of the pond struggling to stay afloat in the 20 foot water.
Dundee Commercial Motor Vehicle Officer Joe Schumaker grabbed personal floatation equipment and began to make his way out to the victim. While doing so, Officer Schumaker also fell through the ice but continued wading out to complete the rescue. Officer Schumaker was joined by two men, Paxton Barnes and Garrett Desbrough who assisted with a line from shore to help bring them safely back to shore.
Once out of the water, the victim was treated by Emergency Medical Services Personnel on scene and was transported to the Hospital for additional treatment.
Officer Schumaker was treated on scene and returned to duty.
“The Dundee Police would also like to recognize the 911 caller, Jonathon Garza from Clinton Township. He is a truck driver for Hungry Howie’s and was making a delivery to the store immediately after the boy fell through the ice. He heard the boy screaming for help and called 911. He was in the right place at the right time.”
