12-year-old metro Detroit boy dies after tree falls on him during field trip at nature center

A 12-year-old metro Detroit boy has died after a large tree accidentally fell on him during a field trip to the Howell Nature Center, according to police.

The boy was part of a class from Our Lady of Victory Catholic Parish in Northville, according to officials. During the presentation, a tree unexpectedly broke and fell on the boy.

The boy was airlifted to Mott Children’s Hospital in Ann Arbor and was listed in critical condition, according to a news release. We are told he has passed away.

“Our hearts break and we are deeply saddened by the incident that occurred here at Howell Nature Center. Our thoughts and prayers are with the child, their family, fellow students, teachers, and staff during this difficult time. The park and clinic will be closed tomorrow September 27, 2024 so staff can come together and process today’s events,” Howell Nature Center said in a statement.
