Authorities are continuing to investigate an early morning suspected explosion & fire at an apartment complex on Detroit’s west side, sending a total of 12 people—six adults and six children—to the hospital.
The incident happened Monday in the 13000 block of Littlefield Street near Schoolcraft Avenue & Grand River around 5 a.m.
When crews arrived on scene, they found the building engulfed in flames and multiple people trapped inside.
Among the injured are a 27-year-old woman and a 3-year-old child, both in critical condition after suffering severe burns. Authorities say a mother and her four children were also rescued from the apartment and transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
A 30-year-old man suffered burns to approximately 90% of his body, while the 27-year-old woman sustained burns covering 20 to 40%. The young girl, just 3 years old, has burns on about 15% of her body.
All 12 individuals were pulled from the burning building by first responders. Their current conditions range from stable to critical.
At this time, officials have not determined the cause of the suspected explosion. Authorities also say the emergency phone alert was accidentally sent to some communities by mistake.
