1 dead after wrong-way driver crashes into bus on Lodge Freeway

A driver is dead after a wrong way crash involving a bus on the Lodge Freeway on Saturday.

The crash happened this morning around 5:00 a.m. on Southbound Lodge near Livernois.

911 started to receive several calls of a wrong way driver of a pick up truck going northbound in the southbound lanes of the Lodge, police said.

Metro South troopers attempted to locate the vehicle and were informed that the pick up had struck a DDOT bus head on.

The Ram immediately caught fire and troopers were unable to rescue the driver, State police said. The driver was later pronounced dead on scene.

The driver of the DDOT bus was transported to a local hospital for what appear to be non life threatening injuries, authorities said in a news release.

“At this time it hasn’t been determined where the wrong way driver entered the freeway and why they were going the wrong way.” said F/Lt Mike Shaw.

Investigation is continuing.

This marks the third fatal crash that occurred on the Lodge freeway in one week, with two happening hours apart from each other.
