A wrong-way crash on westbound I-96 Freeway near Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard in Detroit early Sunday morning left at least one person dead and sent several others to the hospital.
At 3:15 a.m., Michigan State Police received reports of a sedan driving eastbound in the westbound lanes on I-96. Shortly after, a head-on collision was reported.
Troopers arrived to find a heavily damaged sedan and SUV. The SUV had multiple occupants, who were given first aid at the scene before being transported to two local hospitals, according to authorities.
The female driver of the sedan was pronounced dead at the scene, state police said.
“Troopers are currently investigating this crash on scene and attempting to determine how the driver entered the freeway in the wrong direction,” said State Police F/Lt Mike Shaw. “They will also need to wait on medical examiner reports to see if the driver was impaired or had a medical condition.
There have been multiple wrong-way crashes on freeways across metro Detroit within recent months, with many being fatal.
